Our Story

Valerie and Carrie met while co-hosting a literacy event almost 4 years ago. When the chance came to work together to create an event that was charity based and that could inspire others to give back both leapt at it. Valerie and Carrie share a love of reading, giving back, and of course, nerdiness. They are excited to take their passions of literacy, fantasy and community to Wizarding Dayz.

Valerie Cameron-Walker – Co Owner / Founder

Valerie Cameron-Walker has been working in event and promotions management for over 10 years. Starting with the Walt Disney Company, Valerie learned and excelled in make events interactive, hands on and entertaining for everyone involved. She owns several event and entertainment companies including the co- ownership of Marvel News Online and is co host on Val and Mike in the Morning for B98.7.

Her love for nerd and pop culture and knowledge of event, volunteer and brand management has led her to help and work with many local conventions and festivals including Salt Lake Comic Con, Fantasy Con, Salt City Steam Fest and Salt Lake Gaming Con.

Some fun facts about Val: she loves Star Wars, it is her favorite fandom. Her favorite Fantasy books are A Wrinkle in Time, The Hobbit and Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Her most favorite thing is daughter Sammi.


Carrie Rogers-Whitehead – Co Owner / Founder

 Carrie Rogers-Whitehead is an information professional, instructor, writer and self-proclaimed “geek.” She spent almost a decade as a librarian, working across sectors to increase literacy engagement. In that role she led anime conventions and Yule Balls for teens and presented on geek culture and graphic novels for years.

Carrie is passionate about providing equitable access: whether that be through her role as CEO of Digital Respons-Ability, her work in the autism community or her community volunteer work and outreach.

Carrie believes that fandoms are an amazing path to literacy and education and summed up years of work in this area through her recent talk at TEDxSaltLakeCity. She hopes that Wizarding Dayz inspires others to learn and read more.

In her spare time Carrie loves to read, with manga, nonfiction and anything Neil Gaiman at the top of her reading list. She is working to instill a love of reading and everything geeky in her young son

Jessica Millsaps – Vendor Director / Co-Owner

Jes has years of event experience for such events as FantasyCON, The Utah Pride Festival, The Utah Belly Dance Festival and fundraising events throughout Utah. A former entertainer herself, Jes is skilled at bringing people together for a fun cause. Jes has experience working with youth from underserved populations as a trainer and wants to make her events a special place for all. Fluent in multiple languages, Jes brings her experience not only to vendors, but planning auxiliary events and outreach.

Lisa Mason – Operations Director / Co-Owner

Lisa Mason has worked with nonprofit organizations for 20 years. A military veteran she was a Treasure for Family Readiness Groups and other nonprofits around the United States. As Leader at 5thSpecial Forces Group she learned to create and organize large scale events. Moving to Utah provided her the opportunity by volunteering with FantasyCON, Salt Lake Gaming Con and later becoming KidCon director at FanX.  Lisa loves working with children and families and most importantly, giving back.
